about

In the summer of 2013, singer and trumpeter Barbara Snow heard a BBC
Radio 4 item on the work of Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders in the Syrian civil war. In it, a boy called Ali was reported to have said ‘you won’t believe what I have seen’. These words inspired Snow to write and record a song with her band Chico Chica and donate the proceeds of the sales to the Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders Syria Crisis Appeal.

lyrics

Who are we to interfere
In other peoples' wars?
Coz things are not as they appear
So let's not shed a tear
On some forgotten cause.

A
Who is good and who's is bad?
It's really hard to say
And who's this guy they call Assad?
I tell you I'm so glad
It's all so far away.

B
And then I saw her muddy hands
I wondered where they could have been
The jagged gestures seem to say:
'You won't believe what I have seen'.

In that forsaken desert sand
I had to draw a line
It's more than I can understand.
What happens in that land
Is no concern of mine.

And then I saw his piercing eyes
On the television screen
The silence shouted loud and clear:
'You won't believe what I have seen'.

But then I saw the horror on his face
I wasn't sure what it could mean
And then I heard those painful shaking words:
'You won't believe what I have seen'.
